I, Helaman Ferguson, Sculptor, math Ph.D., carved this seven ton two billion year old quartz diorite “Invisible Handshake” from South Africa out of a 24 ton block. The mathematical matter is a triply punctured torus now carved with negative Gaussian curvature. The base footprint is a right-angled hyperbolic pentagon which fits into a poincare disc tiling of black and white checkerboard of right hyperbolic pentagons. Helaman’s main hand tool is a sixteen horsepower diamond chain saw; his studio is in Baltimore, Maryland.

It is with great sorrow that we have to report to members the death of Ernst von Glasersfeld. Ernst died 12 November 2010, at 7am US east coast time.
