Johannes Goebel
Johannes Goebel is founding director of the Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center (EMPAC) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute since 2002. Between 1990 and 2002, he was the founding director of the Institute for Music and Acoustics at the Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie (ZKM) in Karlsruhe, Germany. In both cases he started the (ad)venture from scratch and was heavily involved in defining the architectural and technological parameters so the aspired production and research in those new centers would find optimal conditions. Before these two projects, he built instruments out of wood and metal with special or without any tuning system, started with computer music at the Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics at Stanford University in 1977, composed, taught, improvised, curated, produced, published; and lectured in the field of aesthetics on “music and technology”.
