OVERVIEW   The ASC has established a permanent Archive to ensure continuity in the preservation of official Society records and other materials documenting the history of cybernetics.

The ASC Archive materials are held by the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign Library. At the present time, there are two sets of material comprising the collection:

The ASC Archives are one component of the University of Illinois Archives, which are open to the public.

It is hoped that these materials will eventually constitute a critical mass of materials for researchers in the intellectual history of cybernetics.

CURRENT STATUS   Some ASC materials have already been transferred to Illinois, beginning with copies of Society publications going back to the earliest newsletters of the 1960s.

In addition to official Society publications, the Illinois Archive has agreed to accept personal papers of scholars and others who have been closely associated with the Society. A set of lecture notes from a course offered by W. Ross Ashby have been donated to the Illinois collection.

These materials join existing collections at Illinois related to the Biological Computer Laboratory and its Director Heinz von Foerster.

OUR INTENTIONS FOR THE FUTURE   It is hoped that these materials will eventually constitute a critical mass of materials for researchers in the intellectual history of cybernetics.

The horizon of future activities within the Archives Project includes the collection and appropriate preservation of non-print materials (audio, video and digital multimedia); gathering articles and books that are concerned with the history of cybernetics; identification of oral history documents related to cybernetics; protecting the personal papers of workers in the field; and preserving artifacts such as pioneering experimental electronic equipment.

Not least, the Society intends to gather its own records (minutes of meetings, records of Society awards, official statements and policy documents), some of which have been lost during years of informal transfer among Society committees and projects.

HOW TO HELP   Anyone interested in participating in this effort is invited to contact the ASC Archives Project Coordinator:
