For tourist attractions in and around Richmond, see http://www.visitrichmond.org. In addition to the many attractions within Richmond itself, a few popular destinations just a short distance from the conference site include:
- The Levi Coffin House, a safe haven for slaves who escaped via the Underground Railroad prior to the U.S. Civil War, is located just north in Fountain City. About 2000 slaves hid in this house and were ushered to freedom. It is considered one of the most important historic sites in the U.S. (top 25, according to The History Channel).
- Centerville, a small town just to the west of Richmond, is considered one of the top antique venues in the country. Whether you shop or browse, if you like antiques, consider a day in Centerville.
- While both Indiana and Ohio claim the Wright brothers as theirs, Ohio has the most visited attractions: the Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park and the massive National Museum of the U.S. Air Force. The first celebrates the Wright Brothers, in particular. For the second, admission is free, and it can take a full day or more to see all the exhibits, old and new, of airplanes, space vehicles, and related machinery.
- The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center on the Cincinnati waterfront has become a popular destination, unique in its presentation.
- And, of course, there is the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
