It is with great sorrow that we have to report to members the death of ASC President Ranulph Glanville.

Ranulph Glanville died on December 20th 2014.

It is with great sorrow that we have to report to members the death of Ernst von Glasersfeld.

Ernst died 12 November 2010, at 7am US east coast time.

ASC 2014 Elections and New Officers   ASC elections were held in early 2014 to fill multiple Executive Board positions that had become vacant. The new officers elected were:

  • President: Michael Lissack
  • Vice-President: Timothy Jachna
  • Secretary: Robert Martin
  • Treasurer: Arthur Collings
  • Vice President (Membership): Christiane (Candy) Herr
  • Vice President (Electronic Publications): Thomas Fischer

These new officers were due to effective 1 January 2015, but were installed effective early on December 20th, following the death of sitting ASC President Ranulph Glanville (which also leaves the post of Past President vacant). Incoming President Michel Lissack is vacating his post as Trustee. You can review summary information on your ASC officers at:

ASC's New By-Laws   The ASC had been in the process of updating its by-laws (also known as 'the constitution') since early 2009. In early summer 2010 the final draft by-laws were submitted to, and approved by, the ASC membership. The new by-laws took effect at the end of July 2010.

ASC 2010 Conference   The 2010 ASC Conference was held at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy NY, July 29 - August 5.

The conference title was Cybernetics: Art, Design, Mathematics - A Meta-Disciplinary Conversation (C:ADM2010)

Barbara Dawes Vogl was the editor of Patterns (the ASC newsletter) for many years, and the newsletter's longevity and quality were direct results of her dedication to the publication and the topics it addressed.

Barbara retired as Patterns editor after completion of the Winter 2008 edition.

We regret to announce that Barbara passed away June 8, 2009.

The 2009 meeting of the American Society for Cybernetics was held on March 12-15, 2009, in Olympia, Washington. The conference title was "Cybernetics Talk Dance Anticommunication".

ASC 2008 Conference
and
BCL (Biological Computation Laboratory) 50th Anniversary
 
May 11th to 15th, 2008: Urbana Illinois

2008 saw the 50th anniversary of the founding, by Heinz von Foerster, of the Biological Computer Laboratory at the University of Illinois, Urbana / Champaign. The BCL a cauldron of cybernetics and the home of second order cybernetics, featured a star studded cast of membes and visitors. Heinz was also one of the founders of the ASC, which has provided a spiritual home for second order cybernetics since its origination.

Our conference celebrated this remarkable laboratory in joint festival with the Department of Electrical Engineering at UIUC, which was the umbrella under which the BCL sheltered. This activity was organized to coincide with the 8th Understanding Complex Systems (UCS) Symposium (12 - 15 May) on the topic Informatics, Energy and Others.
