ASC Working Group WG Archives
- This is the public page for the ASC Working Group on ASC and Cybernetics Archives and also a page for a global group on Cybernetics Archives that transcends organizational boundaries.
- ASC-Cybernetics Web Site Sitemap created December 2023 https://asc-cybernetics.org/sitemap/
- Please add to the archives projects https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/ASCarchives
- If you wish to join the working groups please contact Peter Tuddenham.
- Archive page on ASC website
- ASC newsletters 1983, 1985, 1986,… and other unlisted publications (probably the link was made available on some communication to ASC members)
- There are scattered publications, like
- The_Lost_Art_of_Listening__Digest_Sharon_McLean.pdf that were uploaded/posted on older pages and thus are rather hidden. They need to be retrieved, indexed and made available in some place.
- There are conference publications under the respective conference page, again hidden unless one digs into the conference site
- Cybernetics of Cybernetics competition resulted in a number of publications, also hidden on its website

Randy Whittaker – From Thomas Fischer -I highly recommend to all here the cybernetics tutorial Randy gave in Richmond in 2011:
Randy’s website is a treasure trove of materials in Autopoiesis, Maturana and cybernetics in general. Unfortunately, Randy’s internet hosting plan has expired, but the material is preserved on the Wayback Machine:

We have archival materials from both the Biological Computer Laboratory and the personal/research papers of cyberneticians at the University of Illinois.
In terms of records from the BCL, we have:
- BCL Publications: https://archon.library.illinois.edu/archives/index.php?p=collections/controlcard&id=1137 (some of these have been digitized and are available here)
- BCL Contract and Conference File: https://archon.library.illinois.edu/archives/index.php?p=collections/controlcard&id=1647
In terms of personal/research papers, we have:
- Heinz von Foerster’s papers: https://archon.library.illinois.edu/archives/index.php?p=collections/controlcard&id=1020
- Ricardo B. Uribe’s papers: https://archon.library.illinois.edu/archives/index.php?p=collections/controlcard&id=11863 (related blog post by student who processed the papers, available here)
- Murray L. Babcock’s papers: https://archon.library.illinois.edu/archives/index.php?p=collections/controlcard&id=11155 (the digitized recordings related to Babcock’s work with the Dynamic Signal Analyzer, an “ear to brain” machine, are available here). Also, here is a digitized photo of the DSA.
Additionally, we have the papers of Stuart Umpleby, but those mostly document his time as a student here (though also some of his work with ASC): https://archon.library.illinois.edu/archives/index.php?p=collections/controlcard&id=5151
And, we do have Paul Schroeder’s papers documenting his time as a student at UIUC: https://archon.library.illinois.edu/archives/index.php?p=collections/controlcard&id=11499
Lastly, I will mention that we had a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities to digitize materials mainly from von Foerster’s papers, and also collaborated with MIT, the American Philosophical Society, and the British Library to digitize their related papers. We then tested machine learning and natural language processing tools on the materials. The results of this project are available here: https://digital.library.illinois.edu/collections/38ec6eb0-18c3-0135-242c-0050569601ca-1
