Thirty-three years ago, February 1979, in this very place – Asilomar – Gregory Bateson was celebrated at a conference in his honor. Although in failing health, he responded to the invitation with “Heck, I can’t sit and sulk at Esalen while the boys talk nonsense at Asilomar. Send more information, please.” The two rare tapes screened tonight are from that event, one of Gregory’s speech and the other of toasts in his honor.
